FEATURE ARTICLE ............JANUARY 2012
Next level Goals, arising from your Big Vision
© Hyacinth E. Gooden-Bailey,M.A.
Goals and goal setting are common terms when talking about education, learning,
motivation, business, money-making, and life in general. I have written about achieving
goals and spoken about this on my radio shows but I want to revamp that topic at this
point. I will start with the fact that just naming something a goal may be a trap. How
many goals can you have at one time? Should you just focus on one goal at a time?
There you have a few good questions to begin rethinking the subject. You may, of
course, have as many focal points as you wish, especially if you are blessed with
several talents and are a very aware person, but think twice.
What I want to note is that setting goals all depends on what your core concerns or true
desires are. If something does NOT matter to you, you won’t be concerned about setting
goals to reach it, overcome it or excel in it. You will agree. This may be the time to
consider what those true desires and concerns of yours are before lining up any goals,
which might become burdens.
Primarily, goals should be the children of our vision. Your vision is the big picture, and
once you gain sight of that big vision you begin to give birth to goals to get there or to be
there. You resolve with each one, what effort, energy, channels, or steps you will
activate to make the big picture a reality. Again, what of these goals? If a goal just
states that you must get from A to B, that you must acquire 0000 in 00 days, or that you
must be at that level by such and such a date, this might be a setup for pitfalls and great
disappointment. It does not mean that goals should not involve high targets or risks,
because Visions of themselves are usually larger and grander than what is ordinarily
possible, and should be. What it does mean is that setting deadlines, and limits and final
tallies as your everyday way of dealing with your dreams, desires and vision, may
propel you along to a certain point, but unprepared for things shifting in another
direction, you may end up quitting over and over again.
Looking at goals as a path and process in the direction of your vision generates more
action and enjoyment than setting up fixed points. I know this may touch on the nerves
of those who have faithfully promoted the S.M.A.R.T. goals model. Maybe if you think in
more mathematical terms terminal goals may excite you, but if you think in more right-
brained creative terms you should be able to relax while keeping your eyes on the
Vision ahead and re-scripting as you go along.
Although thinking in terms of goals help trigger the start-up of many things, thinking
goals all along is not inherently motivating or energetic in nature. Often goals become a
burden. Try breaking down goals into manageable steps, interesting investigations,
creative experiments and possible accomplishments that will make the next move
seem even more within reach. That way fear of failure, or fear of any kind (which I have
written about too) is not entertained so much as excitement with moving forward in the
right direction. Goal setting tends to have many of us over-load ourselves rather than do
what is from our heart and soul. The real deal is that goals should be delightful
outcomes in view (even if they are to overcome evils in the world and not just find
personal fulfillment), since they are ideally generated from our deep desires and heart-
felt creativity and wisdom, born of bigger and brighter visions.
So, when you think of goals, first examine your concerns and desires, not what others
want of you, and then open your inner eyes to examine your divinely-given vision for
your role on this planet. Then, begin to plot as the energetic cues, hints and possibilities
appear in your thoughts and experience. With each movement slash victory, you will
have a goal already reached to celebrate, rather than a goal not reached to be buried.
